RIVER ACCESS STATUS: OPEN
Rappahannock River users are advised that the river channel is now open for recreational traffic, and use of a portage is no longer required.
The portage was installed to accommodate bridge construction underway for the I-95 Southbound Rappahannock River Crossing project.
The river channel is anticipated to remain open to recreational traffic until early Aug. 2021, when portage use will be required again on a temporary basis. Boaters can check the real-time status of river access on this page to learn if a portage is active by clicking here.
What Rappahannock River Traffic Can Expect During I-95 Construction
Recreational use of the Rappahannock River will continue during construction of the I-95 Southbound Rappahannock River Crossing project.
River access will remain open for the majority of construction, which began near the Rappahannock River in November 2018 and will be complete in May 2022. For brief periods, a portage will be installed that will require boaters to disembark from their boat and carry watercraft a short distance across the portage area.
Signs are being posted to notify river traffic of the construction zone ahead. Additional warning signs are posted when a portage is in place.
